The Sensex rose 1,225.07 points, or 1.62%, to close at 76,917.85, while the Nifty 50 gained 370.05 points, or 1.58%, to end at 23,810.85. In just four sessions, the Sensex has gained about 3,670 points from 73,249 and the Nifty is up more than 800 points. Back-to-back gains of more than 1,200 points show that investors are buying with increasing confidence.

Consumer goods companies led the gains. BSE, Nestle India and Tata Consumer Products were the top Nifty gainers. The Nifty MidCap 100 rose 1.06% and the Nifty SmallCap 100 added 0.31%, a smaller gain that suggests investors are focusing on large, established companies for now.

Impact on the stock market

Sectoral gainers: Nifty FMCG rose 3% and outperformed every other sector. Marico’s strong results showed that lower raw material costs are improving profits for consumer goods companies, and Nestle India and Tata Consumer also moved higher.

Sectoral losers: Nifty PSU Bank declined the most, with SBI falling 1.7% after its results showed that operating profit had declined even though net profit increased.

Market aftermath: Impact on stocks

SBI Q2: Profit Rises 14% but the Stock Falls 1.7%

State Bank of India reported net profit of ₹23,038 crore, up 14.3% year-on-year and above the ₹22,859 crore analysts expected. Net interest income, the difference between what the bank earns on loans and pays on deposits, rose 14.7% to ₹49,143 crore, also ahead of estimates. However, a one-time gain of ₹7,289 crore, compared with ₹4,593 crore a year ago, supported the profit figure, and operating profit fell 1.4% to ₹26,937 crore. Investors focused on that decline, and the stock closed 1.7% lower at ₹970.25.

The rest of the results were strong. Gross bad loans fell to 1.39% of total loans, the lowest in more than two decades, and net bad loans eased to 0.36%. New bad loans dropped to ₹5,227 crore from ₹7,046 crore in the June quarter. The bank’s domestic interest margin improved by 0.11 percentage points to 3.11%. SBI kept its loan growth forecast at 14-15% and expects its margin to stay above 3% this year. The stock has fallen only 1.5% in 2026, while the Nifty is down 8.9%.

Marico Q2: Profit Rises 31% and Shares Jump 8%

Marico, the owner of Parachute and Saffola, reported consolidated net profit of ₹550 crore, up 31% and above the ₹530 crore analysts expected. Revenue grew 12.95% to ₹3,897 crore. The main reason for the improvement was cheaper copra, the dried coconut used to make Parachute oil, which stayed about 35% below its peak during the quarter. The gross margin, which measures profit after raw material costs, expanded by about 6 percentage points, and operating profit grew 27%, the strongest growth in 50 quarters. The shares rose 8.21% to ₹864.10 around 2 pm.

The growth came from higher sales volumes as well as lower costs. India volumes grew 10%, India revenue rose 9.83% to ₹2,916 crore, and international revenue jumped 23.39% to ₹981 crore. Profit from the India business rose 31%, its best growth in 51 quarters. Managing Director Saugata Gupta said Marico can now grow strongly regardless of commodity prices. The company expects double-digit revenue growth this year, revenue above ₹15,000 crore, and operating profit growth in the mid-twenties.

Trident Q2: Profit Jumps 93% and a ₹4,650 Crore Expansion Plan

Trident’s profit rose 93.1% to ₹175.5 crore from ₹90.9 crore, even though revenue fell 3.8% to ₹1,719.48 crore. The company earned more on each rupee of sales: operating profit rose 46.5% to ₹313.7 crore, and the margin improved to 18% from 12%. The shares rose as much as 13.4% to ₹25.18 from ₹22.20 but gave back much of that gain and were trading 5.95% higher at ₹23.45 around 1 pm.

The bigger news was the expansion plan. Trident approved a ₹4,650 crore investment, about one-third of its roughly ₹12,500 crore market value. The plan includes 99,840 new spindles at its yarn plant in Budhni, Madhya Pradesh, a new yarn plant at Dhar with 1,99,680 spindles on 179.2 acres of land, 336 new looms for bedsheets, more paper production capacity, and a renewable energy project. Motilal Oswal remains cautious, with a Neutral rating and a target of ₹24. It sees raw material prices, US tariffs and slowing exports as the main risks.

Crude Oil: Brent Near $105 as Trump Says Iran Wants a Deal

At 10.01 am, January Brent futures were at $105.06, up 0.28%, and WTI was at $96.90, up 0.46%. On the MCX, November crude traded at ₹9,183, up 1.22% from ₹9,072, while copper fell 1.42% to ₹1,372.20. Oil is still well below last Friday, when Brent traded above $116.

Two developments pulled oil in opposite directions. The Wall Street Journal reported US strikes on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, which officials described as defensive, after Iranian media reported explosions there on Monday. Meanwhile, President Trump posted that oil prices had dropped by almost $10 a barrel because people believe there will not be a war, and said Iran wants a settlement as soon as possible. His comments came on the day of the US mid-term elections, as Republicans face criticism over high fuel prices. For India, Brent near $105 is a significant improvement from $116, though it remains high.

Conclusion

The market has now gained for four days in a row. The Sensex added 1,225 points to reach 76,917, the Nifty is close to 24,000, and FMCG stocks led with a 3% gain. The results again showed that investors look closely at where profit comes from. Marico rose because both volumes and margins improved, and Trident rose on stronger margins and a large investment plan, while SBI fell because its profit relied on a one-time gain. With Brent down from $116 to about $105 and the US mid-term results due, the next few days will show whether the improving signs on Iran lead to a deal.
