In the last decade, India's electronics and semiconductor sector has experienced swift expansion owing to government programs like "Aatma Nirbhar Bharat" and "Make in India." These initiatives have resulted in an almost sixfold growth in the total scale of the Indian electronics manufacturing industry from Rs. 1.9 lakh crore (US$ 22.8 billion) in 2014-15 to Rs. 11.32 lakh crore (US$ 136 billion) in 2024-25 due to the implementation of several PLI schemes; tax reforms, customs changes, and other ecosystem enhancement initiatives. Along with this notable rise in overall manufacturing, the production of mobile devices has also seen substantial growth during this time. The count of local producers grew from merely two in 2010 to more than 300 by 2020. Under the PLI initiative for "Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing," the production of mobile devices rose from Rs. 2.2 lakh crore (US$ 26.4 billion) for the fiscal year 2020-21 to Rs. 5.5 lakh crore (US$ 66.1 billion). Prior to 2020, electronics exports saw a notable rise during that timeframe, climbing from Rs. 38,000 crore (US$ 4.56 billion) in 2014-15 to ₹. 3.26 lakh crore (US$ 39.2 billion) in 2024-25, thus establishing electronics as the 3rd-largest export sector for India. To enhance local value addition, the Government of India launched the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) in 2025. This has already produced proposals with an estimated combined potential of Rs 1.15 lakh crore (US$ 13.8 billion) in contrast to an estimated overall functional investment of around. Rs 59,350 Crore (US$ 7.1 billion). Moreover, India boasts a rapidly evolving Semiconductor ecosystem, marked by the initiation of the Semicon India Programme.
