Airline Stocks Slide on Rising Crude, ATF Prices

INDIGO
IndiGo and SpiceJet shares extended losses on Wednesday as rising crude oil prices and higher Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices raised concerns over increased operating costs. IndiGo fell 2.17%, while SpiceJet declined 2.70%. Brent crude rose around 1% to $95.60 a barrel, amid escalating US-Iran tensions and concerns over possible disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz. Domestic ATF prices were also increased by 5.46%, marking the second consecutive monthly hike. Jet fuel accounts for nearly 40% of airline operating costs, making sustained crude and ATF price increases a key margin concern. Airlines may face further pressure if higher fuel costs cannot be fully passed on to passengers through higher fares.

IndiGo, SpiceJet Shares Fall as Crude Nears $96

INDIGO
and SpiceJet shares extended their losing streak on Wednesday amid rising crude oil prices and another hike in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices. InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, was trading at Rs 4,942.50 on the NSE at 9:31 am, down 2.17%, while SpiceJet shares were trading at Rs 9.72 on the BSE, down 2.70%. On Wednesday, Brent crude jumped 1% to $95.60 a barrel, heading for its fourth gain in five sessions, as escalating fighting between the US and Iran heightened concerns over disruptions to energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Domestic ATF prices were increased 5.46% on Tuesday, marking the second consecutive monthly hike. ATF prices rose by Rs 6.28 per litre to Rs 121.28 per litre from Rs 115 per litre. Airline stocks had already ended lower on Tuesday following the ATF price revision, with InterGlobe Aviation falling 3.48% to Rs 5,052 and SpiceJet declining 3.20% to Rs 9.99. ATF prices had risen 7.5% in August following three consecutive monthly reductions. Fuel accounts for nearly 40% of an airline's operating costs, making movements in ATF prices a key factor for the sector. Any sustained rise in jet fuel prices can put pressure on airline margins, particularly when carriers are unable to fully pass on higher fuel costs to passengers.

Airline Stocks Fall as ATF Prices Rise 5.46%

INDIGO
Shares of domestic airlines IndiGo and SpiceJet traded lower on Tuesday morning after Aviation Turbine Fuel prices were increased for the second consecutive month, raising concerns over higher operating costs for carriers. InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, was trading 2.80%, from the previous close. SpiceJet shares fell 0.87%. ATF prices for domestic airlines were raised by 5.46% on Tuesday, with the price increasing by ₹6.28 per litre. The back-to-back increases come after three consecutive monthly reductions beginning April 2025. During that period, ATF prices were cut by a cumulative ₹12,239.17 per kilolitre. The subsequent increases of ₹8,949.38 per kilolitre have now erased nearly three-fourths of those gains. Fuel is one of the largest expenses for airlines, accounting for nearly 40% of their operating costs. As a result, sustained increases in ATF prices can put pressure on airline margins, particularly if carriers are unable to fully pass higher costs on to passengers through fares. ATF prices also vary across cities because of differences in local taxes, including VAT. In August, ATF prices stood at ₹86,077.14 per kilolitre in Mumbai, ₹95,512.26 per kilolitre in Chennai and ₹95,164.90 per kilolitre in Kolkata. State-owned oil marketing companies Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation revise ATF and cooking gas prices on the first day of every month. The revisions are based on average international benchmark fuel prices and prevailing foreign exchange rates. Meanwhile, domestic petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged.

Fuel Prices Move Again: Who Could Be Impacted in Nifty 500.

Fuel-price changes can reshape industry margins, so investors should study cost structures, pricing power, and earnings sensitivity before drawing conclusions. Imagine India’s economy as a giant highway. On one side, airlines are paying more at the fuel pump. On the other, hotels and restaurants are paying more for commercial cooking gas. From September 1, ATF prices increased **5.46% to ₹121.28/litre**, while the 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder rose **₹9.50 to ₹2,747.50**. ATF is particularly important because fuel can account for up to **40% of airline operating costs**. That creates an interesting market-learning exercise. ✈️ **Potential pressure area:** **

INDIGO
** — higher ATF can increase operating costs, making fuel-price movements an important earnings variable. 🏭 **Stocks worth studying for the OMC angle:** **Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation** — these companies operate across refining and fuel marketing, so changes in petroleum-product pricing, international benchmarks and marketing economics can influence their financial performance. But here is the important lesson: **a price increase is not automatically bullish for an oil company.** Realisation, crude costs, inventory gains/losses, government policies, taxes and compensation mechanisms all matter. For investors, the better question is not *“Which stock will rise?”* It is: **“Which company has the strongest ability to absorb or pass through changing energy costs?”** That is the kind of thinking that turns a headline into useful market research. ⚠️ **Disclaimer:** This post is strictly for educational and informational purposes. It is not a stock tip, investment recommendation, buy/sell/hold advice, or a promise of returns. Investors should conduct independent research and consult a SEBI-registered investment professional before making investment decisions.

LEARN WITH INVESTOGAINER--> WHY TRACKING CRUDE IS IMPORTANT!

अगर आप Indian Stock Market में थोड़े भी active हैं, तो आपने एक चीज जरूर notice की होगी: Crude Oil में बड़ा move आते ही Indian market में reaction शुरू हो जाता है। कभी headline होती है: “Crude Oil jumps 5% — Indian markets under pressure.” और कभी: “Crude Oil falls sharply — Banks, Auto and Paint stocks gain.” 1. Aviation — Crude Rising का बड़ा Victim 2. Paint Companies — Crude का Hidden Impact 3. Tyre Companies Tyre industry का crude से indirect लेकिन meaningful relationship है। 4. Potential Beneficiaries:
