MRPL Set to Report Q2 Results Today, Dividend Eyed

MRPL
MRPL shares closed at Rs 175.89 on Tuesday, up over 1%, as the state-run refiner heads into its board meeting today to approve July-September results, with analysts watching for a possible interim dividend alongside the numbers. The board will consider standalone and consolidated unaudited results for Q2 and H1 FY27 at today’s meeting, part of a results cluster that also includes BHEL and Canara Bank reporting the same day. Expectations are elevated after a blowout June quarter, when net profit jumped to Rs 945.68 crore and revenue surged 46% year on year, a beat that sent the stock soaring over 13% in a single session in July. Refiners have benefited this year from firmer refining margins and steady product demand, a tailwind MRPL must show carried into September. A refiner’s profit swings sharply with crude prices and refining margins, making each quarter something of a coin toss even when the underlying business is healthy, which is why the market reacted so strongly to the June quarter beat. A repeat of that scale of surprise, either way, could move the stock meaningfully given how refining stocks have re-rated this year. An interim dividend, if announced, would give income-focused investors another reason to pay attention beyond the profit number. The stock has ranged between Rs 136.02 and Rs 212.31 over the past 52 weeks, with a market cap of around Rs 30,826 crore, still below its yearly high set after July’s rally. With results due later today, the next few hours will show if MRPL strings together a second straight standout quarter. Disclosure: Palash Kag, Proprietor, Sarathi Research (SEBI Reg. Mangalore Refinery falls 10% from high after unit fire

BLEL
Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited had a fire at its Coker Hydrotreater Unit on 30 September, and the stock fell 10 percent from Rs 180.80 to Rs 162.40 within the session. What MRPL has filed: - 30 September, around noon: a high-pressure Cold Separator ruptured; one worker died - 1 October: three spot export tenders (diesel, jet fuel, reformate) withdrawn as a precaution; MRPL says nil material impact on commercial operations - Only that unit was hit; the rest of the refinery runs normally - NSE closes: Rs 171.62 on 29 September, Rs 164.76 on 1 October, down 4.0% I found no restart date or damage estimate. The fire fell on the last day of Q2, so its cost lands in Q3 FY27, not in Q2 results (date not yet out; last year 15 October). MRPL [$MRPL][***** shares trade at Rs 162.45 at 12:39 PM IST on 5 October on StockGro, 22 percent below the 52-week high. P/E 9.07; sector P/E near 13. My view: hold, not a fresh entry. The 9x P/E is a cycle multiple, not a margin of safety. Quarterly EPS over the last four quarters ran Rs 3.58, 8.28, 0.67 and 5.40. Q1 FY27 PAT was Rs 946 crore against a Rs 271 crore loss a year ago, but Rs 471.76 crore of the Rs 1,246 crore PBT was exceptional income from price revisions. The fire adds an operating question to earnings that already swing. Holders stay into Q2 results for a restart timeline; fresh money waits for a dated restart. Support Rs 162.40 (30 September low); resistance Rs 171.62 (29 September close, before the fire). My exit is a close below Rs 162.40, or a restart date after 31 December. अगर ये 3 चीजें एक साथ हुईं… तो इन Stocks में जबरदस्त तेजी?

Crude Oil की तेजी की कहानी अब सिर्फ Strait of Hormuz तक सीमित नहीं रह गई है। अब दुनिया के Oil Market पर एक साथ 3 Supply Shocks का दबाव बन रहा है: SOURCE + ROUTE + REFINERY अगर ये तीनों disruptions लंबे समय तक बने रहे, तो Crude के साथ-साथ Diesel और अन्य Refined Products की कीमतों में भी बड़ा उछाल देखने को मिल सकता है। --->SOURCE — Oil Supply में कमी दुनिया में Oil Supply और Demand लगभग संतुलित रहने पर छोटी सी supply disruption भी कीमतों को तेजी से प्रभावित कर सकती है। Strait of Hormuz दुनिया के सबसे महत्वपूर्ण oil chokepoints में से एक है। EIA के अनुसार 2025 की पहली छमाही में यहां से लगभग 20.9 million barrels/day petroleum liquids गुजरते थे। --->ROUTE — Oil को पहुंचाने का रास्ता लंबा हो गया यह हिस्सा सबसे interesting है। जब Hormuz और Bab el-Mandeb जैसे महत्वपूर्ण routes प्रभावित होते हैं, तो tankers को लंबा route लेना पड़ता है। Reuters के अनुसार Saudi Arabia से Taiwan तक एक tanker को पहले लगभग 19 दिन लगते थे। --->REFINERY — असली समस्या यहां भी है! Crude Oil सीधे आपकी car में नहीं जाता। पहले उसे Refinery में process किया जाता है। और यहीं से Diesel, Petrol, Jet Fuel आदि बनते हैं। अब Global Refining System पर भी दबाव बढ़ रहा है। ---->क्या Diesel सच में 3X हो जाएगा? यह जरूरी नहीं है। 3X Diesel Price एक extreme scenario होगा और इसके लिए supply disruptions का लंबे समय तक बने रहना जरूरी होगा। Governments strategic reserves, alternate suppliers, refinery adjustments और demand destruction जैसे measures से shock को absorb करने की कोशिश कर सकती हैं। ---->किन Stocks पर सबसे ज्यादा Pressure आ सकता है?

MRPL, Chennai Petroleum Shares Rise 5% on Higher Crude

MRPL
and Chennai Petroleum shares surged around 5% on September 28, outperforming a weak broader market, as Brent crude prices jumped nearly 3% above $107 per barrel amid renewed US-Iran tensions. Rising crude prices and tighter fuel supplies have lifted refining crack spreads, supporting expectations of stronger gross refining margins for refiners. MRPL opened at ₹164.25 and climbed 5.2% to an intraday high of ₹173.50, while Chennai Petroleum opened at ₹1,381.40 and gained 5.1% to ₹1,446.25. The gains came even as the Sensex fell more than 1,000 points, or 1.4%, during the session. The rise in crude prices has increased the spread between crude oil and refined petroleum products, known as crack spreads. Analysts cited in the report said the market could be anticipating an improvement in refining margins as oil prices remain elevated. The move also comes against a backdrop of continued geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and global fuel supplies.

ONGC: The Real Story Behind Decades of Wealth Creation

1. Irreplaceable strategic scale: ONGC produces ~70% of India's crude oil and ~84% of its natural gas. That scale gives it earnings durability few companies can match, regardless of which policy or crude cycle is in play. 2. Legacy low-cost production base: Much of ONGC's output comes from decades-old fields (like Mumbai High), where exploration costs were sunk long ago. This structurally low per-barrel cost keeps margins positive across most crude cycles, even after statutory deductions. 3. Surviving multiple full-blown cycles: ONGC has weathered the 2008 financial crisis, the 2014-16 crude crash, the 2020 pandemic demand collapse, the 2022 windfall tax regime, and the 2026 royalty rationalisation and reversal. Each tested margins differently, yet the business kept generating cash and paying shareholders through nearly all of them. 4. Diversification reduces single-point dependency: Stakes in HPCL and MRPL (downstream), plus international operations via ONGC Videsh, mean ONGC's fortunes were never tied to one segment of the value chain or one geography. 5. Compounding through multiple return channels: Since its 1995 listing, ONGC's market cap has grown from ~₹684 billion to over ₹3 trillion, a price CAGR of ~5% alone. Layer in a ~5.6% dividend yield, decades of near-annual payouts, periodic bonus issues, a 2011 stock split, and a 2019 buyback, and the total return for a patient holder looks meaningfully better than the price chart alone. Takeaway: ONGC's wealth creation was never about one bonus issue or one great dividend year. It's strategic scale, cycle-tested resilience, diversified earnings, and consistent capital return discipline, sustained across three decades, that compounds into long-term wealth. Corporate actions were simply how that strength got periodically handed back to shareholders.
