  • 1984: GAIL (India) Ltd. was established in August 1984 as a central public sector undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoP&NG). It was one of the world's most significant cross-country natural gas pipeline projects.
  • 1986: The HVJ pipeline contract valued at Rs 722.49 crore was signed on May 10, 1986. The pipe laying work for the Hazira – Vijaipur section was completed by the middle of June 1987 and energised by the end of July 1987.
  • 1990: In November 1988, GAIL approved to invest ₹ 300 crore to set up an LPG extraction plant at Vijaipur.
  • 1994: Mahanagar Gas Limited was incorporated, and it obtained a certificate to commence business and implement the Bombay City Gas Distribution project.
  • 1995: Vijaipur propane recovery plants were commissioned.
