TATA POWER TO INVEST Rs 2500 CRORE IN WEST BENGAL

India's vertically integrated power company

TATAPOWER

is planning to invest Rs 2,500 crore in a ground-mounted solar project, with a total capacity of up to 500MW, in West Bengal. This will be the biggest power project from the Tata Group firm in the state. The company is looking for land in Haldia, Durgapur, and Bankura, having both industrial and domestic demand for power, along with north Bengal because the use of renewable energy has started in tea gardens. In the past one year, the integrated solar player has installed around 6,000 solar rooftops in Bengal, with total installations standing at around 22,000. As more data centers and industries will come up in West Bengal, there will be more demand for renewable power in the coming years which will benefit the company.

Recently it has added 419 megawatt of utility-scale energy generation capacity during July-September 2026 quarter, more than double the 182 MW commissioned in the year-ago period. A utility-scale project refers to the installation of a large energy infrastructure designed to generate electricity. With these additions, the company's utility-scale operational portfolio has grown to 7.2 GW, comprising 5.8 GW of solar, 1.3 GW of wind, and 281.2 MWhr of Battery Storage capacity. The expansion of renewable energy footprint continues to support India's clean energy transition while contributing to national energy security and sustainability.

Tata Power builds 2.8 GW data centre pipeline

The Tata Power Company Limited (NSE: TATAPOWER) has built a data centre opportunity pipeline of more than 2.8 GW across 18 global and domestic operators. The pipeline spans distribution, transmission and green energy opportunities linked to India’s growing AI and digital infrastructure demand. Key details • Around 430 MW relates to upcoming load under Tata Power’s distribution network. • About 1,236 MW comes from transmission-linked opportunities. • Another 1,150 MW is green energy capacity under active engagement. • The company currently has 29 active workstreams with data centre operators. • Tata Power is also investing in transmission upgrades in Mumbai, including its broader ₹15,000 crore grid expansion plan. My view The interesting part is that Tata Power is trying to capture more than just electricity demand from data centres. Its opportunity spans grid connectivity, transmission, renewable power, storage and supporting infrastructure. That could allow it to participate across multiple parts of the data centre value chain. But the 2.8 GW figure is an opportunity pipeline, not confirmed orders or contracted revenue. Conversion of these engagements into actual projects will matter more than the headline number. What I’m watching next I will watch how much of the 2.8 GW pipeline converts into binding contracts, especially the 1,236 MW transmission and 1,150 MW green-energy opportunities. Stance: Positive on the size of the data centre opportunity, but project conversion and returns on infrastructure investment remain the key triggers.
