TVS Motor Electric Two-Wheeler Capacity Expansion Outlook
TVS Motor Company plans to expand its electric two-wheeler manufacturing capacity to 80,000 units per month by March 2027 to capture rising domestic demand for electric mobility. The company currently maintains a monthly operational capacity of 60,000 to 65,000 units, with its next phase of factory expansion already underway, according to CEO K. N. Radhakrishnan. Electric vehicles (EVs) now represent 11–12% of the overall domestic two-wheeler market, with penetration in the scooter segment surpassing 20%. Demonstrating strong market performance, TVS Motor’s electric two-wheeler sales surged to 1,86,186 units in Q2 FY27, up from 80,009 units in the prior-year period. This translates to a 129% jump in domestic EV sales, significantly outperforming the broader industry volume growth of 84%.
Driven by accelerating adoption, the broader electric two-wheeler sector expanded by nearly 75% in the first half of FY27. CEO Radhakrishnan stated that TVS Motor Company—currently the market leader in the electric two-wheeler segment—expects to maintain its growth trajectory ahead of the industry average. At the same time, competitive intensity is ramping up across the market as rival manufacturers scale production footprints: Bajaj Auto is working to increase manufacturing capacity for its Chetak electric scooter to 80,000 units monthly, while Ather Energy is expanding existing facility capacity beyond 41,000 units alongside developing a new manufacturing plant. Conversely, growth in the traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) two-wheeler segment is projected to moderate in H2 FY27, largely due to a high statistical base from the previous year.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme (CMPS) with a total budgetary outlay of ₹10,000 crore ($1.05 billion) through FY40. First announced in the Union Budget 2026–27, the strategic initiative aims to build a globally competitive container manufacturing ecosystem in India, drastically reduce reliance on foreign container imports, and fortify national supply chain resilience. Designed to support both greenfield manufacturing units and brownfield facility expansions, the scheme is projected to scale India’s domestic container production capacity tenfold to 7.5 lakh Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) annually, laying a robust industrial foundation for the country's maritime and logistics sectors.
The scheme's execution framework comprises three core operational components: Interest Subvention Assistance (ISA) allocated ₹859 crore ($90.37 million) to offer a 3% annual interest rebate on eligible project term loans; Operational Expenditure Assistance (OEA) backed by ₹8,891 crore ($935.40 million) to incentivize containers produced to international maritime standards; and Testing and Certification Assistance with ₹150 crore ($15.78 million) dedicated to establishing shared testing infrastructure such as dynamic longitudinal impact testing facilities. Positioned to transform India into a major global export hub for shipping containers, CMPS is expected to create 3,000 direct and over 50,000 indirect jobs while driving structural demand across domestic ancillary industries, including Corten steel, specialized castings, eco-paints, and industrial woodwork.

India Hosts 61st Global CIML Meeting in New Delhi
India is hosting the 61st Meeting of the International Committee of Legal Metrology (CIML) in New Delhi from October 26 to 28, 2026, marking the first time the country has hosted a conference for the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML). The event convenes global delegates, technical experts, and senior officials to foster international cooperation in measurement standardization and equitable trade practices. Key discussions led by CIML leadership—including President Dr. Bob Joseph Matthew and First Vice-President Ms. Renée Hansson—highlighted legal metrology's crucial role in digital transformation and emerging technologies. Additionally, Director of the International Bureau of Legal Metrology (BIML) Mr. Anthony Donellan detailed ongoing efforts to streamline technical recommendations and advance mutual acceptance of test results via the OIML Certification System (OIML-CS).
In her address, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs Ms. Nidhi Khare emphasized that internationally harmonized, accurate measurements are foundational to economic growth, market transparency, and consumer protection. Underscoring India’s regulatory evolution under the Jan Vishwas reforms of 2023 and 2026, she outlined key measures—such as decriminalizing select technical offenses, instituting improvement notices, and enforcing graded penalties—that balance consumer rights with ease of doing business. India's metrological infrastructure has been further strengthened by its status as an OIML-CS Issuing Authority, the expansion of Government Approved Test Centres (GATCs), and the deployment of the e-Maap National Portal. Additionally, the “One Nation, One Time” National Time Dissemination Project is establishing traceable Indian Standard Time to synchronize critical digital infrastructure across telecommunications, banking, and national power grids.
