Digitalizing Procurement: How India’s GeM Hit the ₹20 Lakh Crore Milestone
Since its launch on August 9, 2016, the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has transformed India's public procurement ecosystem by replacing fragmented, paper-based processes with a unified, transparent, and digital-first platform. Today, GeM bridges more than 1.37 lakh government buyer entities with nearly 25 lakh registered sellers and service providers, driving cumulative transactions past ₹20 lakh crore ($210.03 billion). Featuring a vast catalog of over 10,660 product lines and 350 service categories—ranging from medical hardware and IT equipment to catering, logistics, and human resources—the platform has established itself as an indispensable tool for state purchasing.
Beyond driving sheer scale, GeM serves as a major catalyst for socioeconomic inclusion by empowering smaller enterprises and underserved groups. In FY26 alone, over 11 lakh micro and small enterprises (MSEs) completed 51+ lakh orders worth more than ₹2.36 lakh crore ($24.78 billion), with significant allocations going to women-led businesses (over ₹28,000 crore), SC/ST-owned enterprises (exceeding ₹6,000 crore), and startups (crossing ₹19,000 crore). To further enhance grass-roots accessibility, GeM partnered with CSC e-Governance in June 2026 to pilot 50 GeM Suvidha Kendras for last-mile seller assistance. Backed by data-driven procurement analytics, seamless digital integrations, and expanding artificial intelligence capabilities, the ecosystem continues to elevate transparency, operational efficiency, and ease of doing business across the country.

India’s MedTech Revolution: Building a $250 Billion Global Powerhouse
India’s medical technology sector is undergoing a monumental shift toward self-reliance, transforming the country into a reliable global hub for healthcare innovation. Driven by strategic government initiatives—including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, PRIP Scheme, and dedicated Medical Device Parks—India has already begun indigenous manufacturing for over 50 complex medical devices. To cement international trust and curb import dependency, national efforts are actively tightening regulatory frameworks, upgrading testing infrastructure, and enforcing strict safety standards for long-term supply chain resilience.
Currently valued at ₹1.42–1.52 lakh crore ($15–16 billion) and expanding by nearly 12% annually, India stands as the fourth-largest MedTech market in Asia. Driven by rapid breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, surgical robotics, connected devices, and remote diagnostics, the industry is on track to hit $30–50 billion within this decade and a projected $250 billion by 2047. This trajectory promises to significantly boost domestic manufacturing, exports, and high-skilled employment while making advanced healthcare far more affordable and accessible.

Bihar Makes History: GI-Tagged Mithila Makhana Sets Sail for Australia in First-Ever Sea Shipment
In a major boost for regional agri-exports, Bihar has dispatched its first sea consignment of GI-tagged Mithila Makhana to Australia. Facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the 18-metric-tonne shipment was sourced directly from Darbhanga farmers—yielding them nearly 18% above prevailing market rates—and flagged off from the irradiation packhouse unit in Bihta, Patna. This direct farmer-to-export initiative highlights the rising international demand for Bihar’s high-value produce while marking a strategic shift toward export-oriented agriculture for the state.
Supported by modern processing, quality testing, and cold-chain infrastructure, this milestone sets a benchmark for preparing local produce to meet international standards. APEDA is collaborating with state authorities, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), and processors to enhance Bihar’s overall agri-export ecosystem. While Makhana leads this transition, the movement creates a sustainable roadmap for other GI-tagged and regional agricultural products to expand their footprint across global markets.
