Scaling High-Value ER&D, R&D and Digital Engineering
Driven by a robust pool of technical talent, India’s engineering services exports expanded nearly eightfold over the past decade to reach ₹1.32 lakh crore (US$ 13.8 billion). This rapid growth highlights the country's evolution from traditional cost-effective outsourcing to a global hub for high-value engineering, research and development (ER&D), and technology-enabled services. Indian enterprises now provide core technical support to global businesses across major sectors—including automotive, aerospace, industrial manufacturing, electronics, and telecommunications—by delivering specialized capabilities in engineering design, product development, and complex technical solutions.
Moving further up the global value chain, Indian service providers are tapping into rising global demand for product engineering, digital engineering, embedded systems, simulation, and testing. Grounded in the nation's strong information technology foundation and digital infrastructure, the ER&D segment effectively complements software and business-process exports. Continued investments in innovation, advanced skill sets, and industry-academia partnerships are positioning Indian companies to lead in emerging frontier technologies such as artificial intelligence, industrial automation, electric mobility, semiconductor design, and advanced manufacturing.

PM GatiShakti & Infrastructure Transformation
India’s infrastructure sector has undergone a massive expansion over the past 12 years, backed by a dramatic increase in public capital expenditure from ₹2 lakh crore (US$ 32.71 billion) in 2014-15 to ₹12.2 lakh crore (US$ 127.96 billion) in 2026-27. A key driver of this capital push is the railway sector, where the annual budget grew to ₹2.78 lakh crore, enabling 99.6% rail electrification alongside the deployment of 162 Vande Bharat, two Vande Bharat Sleeper, and 72 Amrit Bharat train services. Simultaneously, the national highway network expanded to 1,46,572 km, with completed road projects under the Bharatmala initiative reaching 22,590 km. Civil aviation connectivity also surged, with operational airports increasing to 165 and 679 UDAN routes actively connecting 95 airports, heliports, and water aerodromes.
Urban mobility, logistics, and essential basic services have experienced similar rapid development under integrated planning platforms like PM GatiShakti and PRAGATI. Operational metro rail networks expanded to over 1,155 km across 26 cities, while major port cargo capacity nearly doubled to 1,728 MMTPA and operational national waterways grew to 32. Across urban and rural development initiatives, the Jal Jeevan Mission extended tap-water access to 15.91 crore rural households, supported by major investments under AMRUT 2.0 and the completion of 7,790 Smart Cities Mission projects worth ₹1,56,257 crore.

Scaling Electronics Exports and 5G Connectivity
Driven by targeted government initiatives including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), and Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0), India’s electronics exports surged over 11-fold to ₹4.24 lakh crore (US$ 47.98 billion) in FY2025-26. Electronic goods have emerged as the nation's third-largest export category, while overall electronics production expanded to ₹6.27 lakh crore (US$ 70.95 billion). Crucially, India has solidified its position as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, with mobile exports recording a 165-fold increase to reach ₹2.59 lakh crore (US$ 29.30 billion)—making mobile phones the country's single largest export product. This rapid expansion generated approximately 12 lakh jobs, with women representing nearly 30% of the broader electronics ecosystem workforce and 70% of mobile manufacturing employment.
Simultaneously, India's digital economy now contributes up to 14% of GDP, underpinned by significant telecommunications infrastructure expansion and dropping data costs. Between 2014 and March 2026, internet subscribers expanded from 25.15 crore to over 109.2 crore, supported by wireless data costs dropping from ₹308 per GB (US$ 5.04) down to ₹7.51 per GB (US$ 0.08). Average mobile broadband download speeds experienced a massive surge, climbing to 132.00 Mbps by late 2025. Network reach has expanded across urban and rural zones, with 5G services available in 99.9% of districts via 5.63 lakh Base Transceiver Stations, while 4G connectivity covers 6.31 lakh villages nationwide.
