ICICI Lombard: profit jumps 27.5%, metric needs attention

ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd reported consolidated net profit of ₹1,031 crore in Q2 FY27, up 27.5% year-on-year. The company also declared an interim dividend of ₹7 per share. At first glance, the results look encouraging. However, investors need to look beyond the profit number to understand the quality of the performance. Investment income rose to ₹1,554 crore from ₹1,249 crore a year earlier, supported by higher capital gains. This helped boost the bottom line. But premium growth tells a more measured story. Gross direct premium income increased just 3% year-on-year to ₹6,792 crore, below the general insurance industry's growth of 7%. There is another metric worth watching: the combined ratio. ICICI Lombard's combined ratio increased to 104.5% in Q2 FY27 from 103.9% a year earlier, according to the reported results. A ratio above 100% generally indicates that claims and operating expenses exceed premiums earned from underwriting, before investment income. This does not automatically make the quarter weak, but it highlights why underwriting discipline matters alongside investment returns. Here are the key factors I would monitor: 1. Premium growth:Can the company regain market share and grow faster than the industry? 2. Combined ratio: Can claims and operating expenses be controlled? 3. Investment income: How sustainable is its contribution to profits? 4. Solvency:Can the insurer maintain a comfortable capital buffer while expanding? view: The profit growth and dividend are positive, but slower premium growth and a higher combined ratio deserve attention. Sustainable performance will depend on improving the core insurance business, not just investment gains. Disclosure: I do not hold ICICI Lombard General Insurance shares as of this post.
