Swiggy: revenue grows 36%profi tability remains the key test
Swiggy Ltd reported consolidated revenue of ₹7,571 crore in Q2 FY27, up 36.1% year-on-year.
Its consolidated net loss narrowed to ₹922 crore from ₹1,092 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.
The headline numbers show strong business expansion, but the more important question is how efficiently Swiggy can convert that growth into profits.
Food delivery revenue increased 21.6% year-on-year to ₹2,338 crore, while quick-commerce revenue rose 33.3% to ₹1,306 crore.
Both businesses are growing, but they operate under different competitive pressures. Food delivery depends on order frequency, restaurant partnerships and customer retention. Quick commerce requires investment in dark stores, logistics, inventory availability and delivery speed.
The challenge is to expand without allowing customer discounts, marketing costs and fulfilment expenses to consume the benefits of higher revenue.
There is also a sequential concern. Swiggy's loss widened from ₹792 crore in the previous quarter to ₹922 crore in Q2 FY27. This means the year-on-year improvement should be assessed alongside the latest quarter-on-quarter trend.
Here are the key factors I would monitor:
1. Food delivery:Can the business maintain growth while protecting contribution margins?
2. Quick commerce:Is higher revenue translating into better unit economics?
3. Operating costs: Are discounts and fulfilment expenses becoming more manageable?
4. Cash burn:Is the company moving towards a more sustainable funding requirement?
5. Competition:*Can Swiggy defend market share without excessive spending?
My view: Swiggy is demonstrating strong revenue growth, but the investment case depends on improving profitability, not revenue expansion alone. The next few quarters should reveal whether scale is beginning to deliver better economics.
