HDFC Bank shares snapped a three-day losing streak on September 10, gaining nearly 1% in early trade. The heavyweight banking stock has recently hit a fresh 52-week low, but analysts see three key triggers that could help revive investor sentiment and support a potential recovery. The three major catalysts are clarity on CEO succession, resolution of the US legal case, and stabilisation in net interest margins. Analysts expect Kaizad Bharucha to take over as CEO for the next three-year term, providing leadership continuity and potentially improving investor confidence.
Another positive is HDFC Bank’s ability to raise around $12 billion through FCNR(B) deposits at 6.25%. The additional foreign-currency funding strengthens the bank’s liability franchise, provides greater balance-sheet flexibility and helps address the credit-deposit mismatch that emerged following the HDFC Ltd merger. It could also reduce the pressure to mobilise domestic deposits and support future loan growth. Valuation remains a key part of the investment case. HDFC Bank has historically commanded a premium valuation, supported by its strong asset quality, retail and MSME franchises, robust liability profile and consistent return ratios. However, the stock is currently trading at around 1.8x price-to-book (P/B), close to a multi-year low, compared with its historical range of above 2.5x P/B.
At current valuations, a significant portion of the negative developments appears to be priced in. While challenges arising from the HDFC Ltd merger are gradually being addressed, recent concerns have further weighed on investor sentiment and kept the stock under pressure. From a technical perspective, however, investors may want to remain cautious. Prospective buyers and new investors could adopt a wait-and-watch approach, as the stock continues to remain firmly entrenched in a bearish trend. Fresh buying at current levels carries elevated risk unless there is clear evidence of a trend reversal.#StockInNews
