Jewellery stocks came under selling pressure in today’s session after the Centre raised import duties on gold, silver, and other precious metals through a late-night notification issued by the Finance Ministry. The hike is expected to significantly increase the cost of precious metal imports and dampen sentiment across the jewellery sector. Among major stocks, Kalyan Jewellers led the decline, falling 4.33% to Rs 346.15. Titan Company slipped 0.43% to Rs 4,037.80, while Senco Gold edged down 0.19% to Rs 312.15. PC Jeweller also traded lower, declining 0.94% to Rs 8.40. However, P N Gadgil Jewellers bucked the trend and traded marginally higher at Rs 627.40, up 0.02%. At the same time, domestic bullion prices surged sharply following the duty hike announcement, triggering a strong rally in the commodities market. On the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), gold prices hit the 6% upper circuit at Rs 1.62 lakh per 10 grams, while silver prices also locked in the 6% upper circuit at Rs 2.95 lakh per kg. In the global market, spot silver climbed 1% to $87.40 per ounce, while spot gold hovered near $4,713.39 per ounce. US gold futures for June delivery also advanced 0.7% to $4,721.80 per ounce.
