BHARATCOAL
a subsidiary of Coal India, reported a strong turnaround in Q2 FY27, posting a standalone net profit of ₹123.74 crore against a loss of ₹52.99 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.
Revenue from operations increased 39.1% YoY to ₹4,412.58 crore from ₹3,173.25 crore, while total income grew 25.5% to ₹4,571.15 crore. Earnings per share improved to ₹0.27 from a loss of ₹0.11.
Operational performance also improved, with raw coal production rising 7.6% YoY to 7.22 million tonnes, while coal offtake increased 9.6% to 8.89 million tonnes.
The company's profit before tax reached ₹185.78 crore, compared with a loss of ₹48.06 crore last year. However, total expenses increased 18.8% to ₹4,385.37 crore, indicating continued cost pressures.
From a research perspective, the return to profitability reflects improving revenue and operational performance. However, the company's net profit margin remains relatively thin at approximately 2.8%, making cost efficiency important for sustainable earnings growth.
Another factor to monitor is the company's recent price increase of up to 14% on selected coking coal grades, which could support future realisations.
Investors should monitor coal production, offtake volumes, operating margins, employee costs and the sustainability of profitability in the coming quarters.
Learning Takeaway: A turnaround from losses to profits is encouraging, but investors should evaluate operating margins, production volumes and cost efficiency to determine whether the recovery is sustainable.
