PAYTM
reported a strong Q2 FY27 performance, with consolidated net profit surging 976% year-on-year to ₹226 crore from ₹21 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Revenue from operations increased 28.5% to ₹2,648 crore from ₹2,061 crore, reflecting continued growth across its payments and financial services businesses.
However, the headline profit growth needs context. Paytm reported profit before exceptional items of ₹229 crore, up approximately 9% from ₹211 crore a year earlier. The previous year's reported profit was affected by a substantial exceptional loss, making the year-on-year increase in reported net profit appear particularly sharp.
Operating performance also improved. EBITDA rose 91.5% YoY to ₹270 crore from ₹141 crore, while EBITDA margin expanded to 10.2% from 6.8%, indicating better operating leverage.
Merchant payments remained an important growth driver. Gross merchandise value (GMV) increased 26% to ₹7.1 lakh crore, net payment revenue rose 21% to ₹644 crore, and monthly transacting users reached 8.5 crore. Soundbox subscriptions climbed to 1.64 crore, supported by merchant adoption.
The company also approved investments of up to ₹500 crore each in Paytm Cloud Technologies and its Singapore subsidiary, signalling continued investment in technology and business expansion.
From a research perspective, rising revenue, improving margins and merchant engagement are encouraging. However, investors should assess the sustainability of profitability, regulatory developments, competition and returns on subsidiary investments.
Learning Takeaway: When a company reports exceptional profit growth, compare earnings before exceptional items and examine operating margins. This helps distinguish genuine business improvement from a low-base effect.
