RailTel Q2 Profit Falls 10% Despite 20% Sales Growth

RAILTEL
a government-owned telecom infrastructure company, reported mixed Q2 FY27 results, with net profit declining 9.9% YoY to ₹68.56 crore from ₹76.07 crore. However, revenue from operations increased 20.5% to ₹1,146.14 crore from ₹951.36 crore. EBITDA grew 13.9% to ₹176 crore, while EBITDA margin contracted to 15.4% from 16.2%, indicating pressure on operating profitability. The company reported a one-time exceptional loss of ₹32.17 crore, which impacted reported earnings. Profit before tax declined to ₹92.30 crore from ₹105.30 crore. Segment-wise, Project Work Services revenue increased 28.3% YoY to ₹749.20 crore, while Telecom Services revenue grew 8% to ₹396.94 crore. RailTel also secured a ₹20.04 crore order from Munitions India for data centre and disaster recovery infrastructure across 13 locations. The board declared an interim dividend of ₹1 per share, with October 30, 2026, fixed as the record date. From a research perspective, strong project revenue growth indicates healthy execution. However, declining margins and exceptional losses highlight the difference between revenue expansion and earnings growth. Investors should monitor project margins, exceptional expenses, order execution, working capital requirements and operating cash flows. Learning Takeaway: Strong revenue growth does not always translate into higher profits. Investors should evaluate EBITDA margins, exceptional items and segment profitability to understand the quality of earnings.
