HDFC Bank Gets RBI Approval to Invest in AU Small Finance Bank
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has granted
HDFCBANK
, India's largest private lender, approval to acquire up to a 9.5% stake in
AUBANK
.
The approval, valid for one year from January 3, 2025, allows HDFC Bank and its group companies, including HDFC Mutual Fund, HDFC Life Insurance, and others, to collectively purchase up to 9.5% of AU SFB's paid-up share capital or voting rights.
Investments in Kotak Mahindra Bank and Capital SFB:
In a separate announcement, HDFC Bank disclosed that it has also received RBI approval to acquire up to a 9.5% aggregate stake in Kotak Mahindra Bank and Capital Small Finance Bank. This approval remains valid until January 2, 2026.
RBI Guidelines:
The RBI has emphasized that the combined ownership by HDFC Bank and its group entities in these institutions must not exceed the 9.5% threshold at any time. This aligns with the RBI Directions 2023, which define "aggregate holding" to include shares owned by the bank, its affiliates, mutual funds, trustees, and promoter group entities.
Significance:
This approval allows HDFC Bank to potentially expand its influence and explore strategic partnerships in the Indian banking sector. It also highlights the growing interest of large financial institutions in investing in smaller banks and strengthening their presence in the market.
