Smart Meter Makers Face 10–20% Cost Pressure

Smart meter manufacturers could face a significant rise in input costs as the ongoing West Asia conflict puts pressure on global commodity and electronics supply chains. According to

GENUSPOWER
, elevated prices of key raw materials such as copper and silver, along with costlier semiconductors and a weaker Indian rupee, could increase smart meter manufacturing costs by around 10–20%. Copper and silver are important components in electrical and electronic equipment, while semiconductors are critical for the communication, processing and connectivity functions of smart meters. A sustained increase in these input costs could therefore put pressure on manufacturers’ margins, particularly where existing contracts have limited scope for immediate price pass-through. The rupee depreciation could further amplify the impact by making imported components and electronic inputs more expensive. However, the long-term outlook for the smart metering industry remains supported by India’s ongoing power-sector digitisation and large-scale smart meter deployment under government-led programmes. For manufacturers, the ability to secure supplies, optimise procurement, improve operational efficiencies and pass higher costs through to customers will be key to protecting profitability. Investors will closely monitor commodity prices, semiconductor availability, currency movements and order execution, as these factors could determine the near-term margin impact across the smart metering sector.
