Higher hallmarking fees pressure jewellery stocks

Jewellery stocks came under pressure on September 16 after the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) raised the gold hallmarking fee by 67% to ₹75 per article from ₹45.

KALYANKJIL
and PC Jeweller fell around 4–5%, while Lalithaa Jewellery Mart hit a 5% lower circuit. The fee hike, effective immediately ahead of the festive season, increases compliance costs for jewellers. The industry body GJC has sought a review, arguing that the higher cost could put additional pressure on compliant players. For investors, the key question is whether companies such as Kalyan Jewellers and PC Jeweller can absorb the additional cost or pass it on to customers without affecting demand and margins. The impact per jewellery article is relatively small, but the broader concern is the cumulative effect across high transaction volumes. Investors should monitor festive-season sales, gross margins, store expansion and cost absorption in the coming quarters. Overall, the BIS fee hike is a near-term cost headwind for jewellery stocks, while sustained festive demand and pricing power will determine the longer-term impact.
