Crude Oil Spike Squeezes Margins: HPCL, IndiGo, BPCL, and Paint Stocks Slide
Brent crude prices surged past $81 per barrel today, reaching a three-month high due to expectations of disrupted Russian oil supplies. This rally stems from expanded US sanctions targeting Russian oil producers and 183 vessels, impacting major importers like China and India. Analysts believe these restrictions will force India and China to seek alternative suppliers, potentially pushing oil prices even higher.
As crude prices rise, industries heavily dependent on oil—such as oil marketing companies, airlines, paint manufacturers, and tyre makers—are facing increased input costs, which hurt their profit margins.
Key impacts on crude-sensitive stocks:
1) Oil Marketing Companies: Hindustan Petroleum (-6%), Indian Oil (-6.3%), and Bharat Petroleum (-4%) declined as higher crude prices raised their costs.
2) Airlines: InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) fell 5.45%, and SpiceJet dropped 3% due to the impact of rising jet fuel prices.
3) Paint Companies: Crude-derived raw materials, which account for 55-60% of input costs, dragged down shares of Asian Paints (-3.15%), Berger Paints (-2%), and Shalimar Paints (-0.57%).
4) Tyre Manufacturers: The rise in crude prices, essential for synthetic rubber and petrochemicals, led to declines in Apollo Tyres (-4%), CEAT (-0.25%), and Balkrishna Industries (-5%).
With oil prices playing a critical role in these sectors, the current surge highlights the challenges crude-sensitive industries face in maintaining margins amid volatile commodity markets.
