Mazagon Dock signs ₹15,000 crore shipyard MoU
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited has signed an MoU to develop a greenfield shipyard at Dugarajapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
The company plans to invest around ₹15,000 crore over the next five to seven years, subject to approvals and clearances.
The proposed facility will have a design capacity of 1.2 million gross tonnes per year and will build commercial vessels such as tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and LNG carriers. The project is expected to create around 45,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The larger Dugarajapatnam Shipbuilding-cum-Port Cluster is estimated at ₹29,254 crore for the shipbuilding and ship-repair yard, while the proposed port is estimated at ₹9,513 crore. Mazagon Dock has been identified as the anchor shipyard.
My view is that the headline ₹15,000 crore investment should not be treated as near-term revenue. This is a five to seven year capital expansion, and the project is still subject to statutory approvals. The bigger point is the change in MDL's business mix. The company is traditionally focused on defence vessels and submarines, while this facility gives it capacity to enter large-scale commercial shipbuilding.
The 1.2 million GT annual capacity is significant, but utilisation, execution timelines, project cost and return on capital will determine whether the expansion adds meaningful earnings over time. The existing naval order pipeline remains another key factor.
MAZDOCK closed at ₹2,252 on September 18, up nearly 2%. I would watch ₹2,250 as the immediate price level and ₹2,300 as the next near-term trigger. A sustained move above ₹2,300 would indicate stronger price momentum, while failure to hold ₹2,250 would keep the setup cautious.
