Trident approves ₹4,650 crore expansion plan
Trident Limited has approved a ₹4,650 crore expansion and modernisation plan across its yarn, sheeting, paper and renewable energy businesses.
The projects will be completed in phases between December 2027 and September 2029, with funding through internal accruals and debt.
The largest capacity additions are in yarn manufacturing. Trident will establish a new facility at Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, with 1,99,680 spindles, and add another 99,840 spindles at its existing Budhni facility. Modernisation at Budhni will convert 48,000 old spindles into 70,176 new spindles and replace 960 rotors with 2,400 new rotors.
The company also plans to increase sheeting capacity from 504 to 840 looms and paper production capacity from 479 to 507 tonnes per day. Its renewable energy plans include a hybrid project with 60 MW of wind power and 20 MW of solar power capacity. The Dhar project already has 179.2 acres of leasehold land, acquired for approximately ₹106.09 crore.
The key detail is existing capacity utilisation. Budhni yarn operates at 94%, while sheeting utilisation stands at 58% and paper at 81%. High yarn utilisation supports the case for additional capacity. However, the relatively low sheeting utilisation raises a question about how quickly new looms can translate into higher revenue. Debt funding and the long execution timeline also make returns on the investment important to track.
My view is cautiously positive on the expansion, given the demand potential and planned efficiency improvements. However, the ₹4,650 crore commitment is substantial, and the benefits will depend on demand, execution and cost control. I will watch quarterly utilisation, debt levels and margin trends as the projects progress through September 2029.
Call: Positive on long-term capacity growth, but execution and returns on capital need monitoring. This announcement alone is not a buy signal.
