UK Expands Fast-Track Visa Programme to Boost Innovation and Attract Global Talent

The UK government has expanded its Global Talent Visa programme to include more than 100 companies, allowing businesses such as AstraZeneca and Jaguar Land Rover to recruit highly skilled professionals through a faster and more flexible immigration process. Previously available only to universities and research institutions, the programme is now being extended to support innovation-led companies and strengthen the country's research and technology ecosystem. The move comes as the UK seeks to attract global talent amid tighter immigration policies in the US. The Global Talent Visa costs £766 and applications are typically processed within three weeks, while successful applicants can bring their partners and children and become eligible for indefinite leave to remain after 3 to 5 years. The government has also announced support measures, including reimbursement of visa fees for fast-growing companies and a dedicated concierge service for overseas recruitment. In addition, the Future Technology Research and Innovation scheme will be expanded, enabling more businesses to host researchers, scientists, interns and technical specialists for up to 2 years. The policy also addresses concerns over high immigration costs, with some UK visa applicants previously paying more than £10,000 (around $13,461) in various fees, while the US is considering increasing the application fee for skilled worker H-1B visas to $100,000. Overall, these initiatives reflect the UK's strategy to enhance its competitiveness by making it easier for global talent and research-driven businesses to establish and expand their presence in the country.
