Waaree Energies denies Gujarat pollution allegations

Waaree Energies Limited has denied allegations that its Gujarat plant discharged untreated industrial wastewater into a village stream, calling the claims unsubstantiated. The stock closed 0.60% lower on October 30, while its year-to-date decline reached 22.04%. The company said the discharge consisted of non-hazardous reverse osmosis reject wastewater generated from drinking water and canteen operations. It maintained that the discharge remained within environmental limits and that it had complied with requirements set by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB). The response follows a Mint report published on October 29 alleging that untreated industrial water from the plant was released into the Chanandevi stream near Sunthwad village in Navsari district. The stream eventually joins the Vanganiya river, which feeds into the Ambika river. Waaree has asked Mint to withdraw the report, stating that any operational issues were minor and resolved promptly. It also said it was reaching out to local residents to address their concerns. My view: The immediate concern is not just the allegation, but whether the company can establish that its wastewater management meets regulatory standards. Waaree's denial and claims of official clearances are relevant, but independent confirmation from the GPCB would carry greater weight in resolving the issue. Environmental compliance concerns can affect reputation, operating continuity and investor confidence, particularly as the company expands its manufacturing capacity. I would watch for a detailed GPCB statement, any further regulatory action and the company's next disclosures before drawing conclusions. For now, the development warrants monitoring rather than a directional call based on the allegations alone.
