Bajaj Finance: profit grows 29%, asset quality improves

Bajaj Finance Ltd reported a 28.7% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to ₹6,367 crore in Q2 FY27. Net interest income rose 23.6% to ₹13,335 crore, while pre-provisioning operating profit increased 23.2% to ₹10,699 crore. The earnings growth is strong, but the asset-quality numbers deserve equal attention. Gross NPA declined to 1.06% from 1.24% a year earlier, while net NPA improved to 0.42% from 0.60%. This suggests that the company has maintained control over reported bad-loan ratios during a period of business expansion. For an NBFC, however, the bigger question is whether this performance can continue as the loan book grows and competition for borrowers intensifies. Bajaj Finance has built its business around consumer lending, personal loans, small-business finance and a wide distribution network. Its growth depends on balancing customer acquisition with prudent underwriting. Here are the key factors I would monitor next: 1. Loan growth:Can the company sustain healthy disbursements without loosening lending standards? 2. Credit costs: Do provisions remain manageable as the portfolio expands? 3. Funding costs:Can net interest margins hold up amid competition for deposits? 4. Asset quality: Do gross and net NPAs remain under control? 5. Capital efficiency: Can growth translate into sustainable returns for shareholders? Despite the strong results, Bajaj Finance shares faced selling pressure on October 21 as financial stocks weakened. This is a reminder that good earnings do not always lead to an immediate price rally, particularly when market sentiment is negative.
