GAIL: profit jumps 139%, subsidiary IPO adds a new trigger

GAIL (India) Ltd reported consolidated net profit of ₹4,719.66 crore in Q2 FY27, up 139.3% year-on-year. Revenue from operations increased 32.7% to ₹47,301 crore compared with the corresponding quarter last year. But the earnings growth is only one part of the story. The company's natural gas marketing business remained a key contributor, with revenue from this segment rising 32% year-on-year to ₹41,226 crore. Natural gas transmission volumes also improved sequentially to 130.10 MMSCMD from 122.36 MMSCMD in Q1. There is another important corporate development. GAIL's board has given in-principle approval for an IPO of its wholly owned subsidiary, GAIL Gas Ltd, involving dilution of up to 25% of its stake. The proposed listing could help unlock value from the subsidiary and provide a separate valuation benchmark for its city gas distribution business. However, the final IPO structure, valuation and timing are yet to be decided. Six city gas distribution geographical areas are also proposed to be transferred to GAIL Gas from January 1, 2027. Here are the key factors I would monitor: 1. **Gas marketing:** Can the company sustain higher volumes and profitability? 2. **Transmission business:** Will pipeline utilisation continue improving? 3. **GAIL Gas IPO:** What valuation and stake dilution will eventually be proposed? 4. **Capital expenditure:** Can planned investments generate adequate returns? 5. **Global gas prices:** How will LNG prices and geopolitical developments affect marketing mar GAIL's quarterly performance is encouraging, and the proposed subsidiary IPO adds an interesting value-unlocking possibility. However, investors should distinguish between consolidated profit growth and the sustainability of operating earnings. The IPO is still at an initial approval stage, not a completed transaction.
