PNB: profit growth and cleaner books put stock in focus
Punjab National Bank reported a 12.8% YoY increase in Q2 FY27 net profit to ₹5,532 crore.
Net interest income also grew 10.8% YoY to ₹11,601 crore, while net NPA improved to 0.25% from 0.28% in the previous quarter.
The combination of earnings growth and improving asset quality is the key takeaway from the quarter.
PNB's profit has now increased for the fifth consecutive quarter. At the same time, gross NPA declined to 2.55% from 2.78% QoQ, showing continued improvement in the bank's loan book.
Another positive is the sharp reduction in provisions. Provisions stood at ₹97 crore, compared with ₹643 crore a year earlier.
Lower provisions can support profitability, but investors should check whether this improvement is sustainable as the credit cycle evolves.
The market reaction was strong, with PNB shares rising as much as 7.7% and touching a seven-month high. This makes the price action important after the initial results-driven move.
What I would watch next:
1. Whether NII growth remains above loan growth.
2. Whether gross and net NPAs continue to decline.
3. Credit costs and fresh slippages.
4. Deposit growth and funding costs.
5. Return on assets and return on equity.
The broader PSU banking sector is also attracting attention. The Nifty PSU Bank index gained around 3% as investors preferred public-sector lenders after the latest earnings updates.
view: PNB's Q2 numbers are encouraging, particularly the combination of double-digit profit and NII growth with improving asset quality. However, after the sharp price reaction, I would focus on whether the earnings improvement continues over the next few quarters rather than chasing the immediate move.
