Union Bank, Federal Bank Rally Post-RBI Hike

Markets opened sharply lower today, with the Sensex falling as much as 446 points and the Nifty slipping 161 points, as investors turned cautious ahead of, and then reacted to, the RBI's monetary policy decision. The RBI hiked the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%, its first rate hike since February 2023, and shifted its stance from "neutral" to "calibrated tightening." But the market has since recovered meaningfully, trimming about 400 points off its day's low. 1)

UNIONBANK
and Federal Bank are today's standout gainers, leading the Nifty Bank index higher after the RBI's policy announcement, a genuinely counterintuitive move given rate hikes typically pressure financials, but banks often benefit from wider lending margins when rates rise. 2)PSU Banks are outperforming broadly, with the Nifty PSU Bank index up around 1%, alongside Nifty Private Bank also advancing post-policy, both bucking the broader market's negative start. 3)Titan was today's biggest loser, down nearly 3.85% to ₹4,374.90, with Hindalco Industries and other rate-sensitive, discretionary names also under pressure. 4)Nifty Metal was the day's biggest laggard sector, reflecting how higher borrowing costs are weighing on capital-intensive, cyclical businesses.
