Kotak Mahindra Bank Q2 profit rises 29%, but margins narrow

Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited (NSE: KOTAKBANK) reported Q2 FY27 standalone net profit of ₹4,212 crore, up 29% YoY. Net interest income increased 16% to ₹8,459 crore, supported by strong loan growth and lower provisions. Key Highlights • Consolidated net profit rose 26% YoY to ₹5,645 crore. • Domestic loans grew 25% YoY, reflecting healthy credit demand. • Deposits increased 23% YoY. • Gross NPA improved to 1.04% from 1.18% in the previous quarter. • Provisions declined 15% YoY to ₹804 crore. • Net interest margin (NIM) fell to 4.31% from 4.53% in Q1 FY27. My View Kotak Mahindra Bank delivered strong earnings growth, supported by expanding loans, improving asset quality and lower provisions. The most encouraging development is the combination of 25% domestic loan growth and declining gross NPAs. This suggests that the bank is expanding its lending business while maintaining credit quality. However, the decline in NIM deserves attention. Despite healthy loan growth, margins narrowed by 22 basis points sequentially. Higher foreign-currency non-resident deposit inflows contributed to margin pressure. I believe the next challenge will be sustaining credit growth without further weakening lending profitability. What I'm Watching Next I will monitor NIM, deposit costs and credit growth in Q3 FY27. Whether margins recover towards 4.5% while asset quality remains stable will be an important indicator of earnings sustainability. Stance: Positive on loan growth and asset quality, but cautious on margin pressure. Sustained earnings momentum will depend on improving funding efficiency. Disclosure: I do not have any holding or position in the stock mentioned above.
