Utkarsh Small Finance Bank has shown positive

UTKARSHBNK
Utkarsh Small Finance Bank has shown a meaningful improvement in its operating momentum. The latest Q2 FY27 business update is particularly encouraging: total disbursements jumped 54.9% YoY to ₹3,525 crore, driven largely by growth in non-JLG lending. The total loan portfolio increased 7.5% to ₹20,063 crore, while deposits grew 6.6% to ₹23,869 crore. This is important because the bank had faced significant stress in its microfinance portfolio earlier, which resulted in high credit costs and losses. In Q4 FY26, the net loss had narrowed to ₹188 crore from ₹375 crore in Q3, while gross NPA improved to 7.7%. The bank is also progressing with its amalgamation scheme with Utkarsh CoreInvest Limited, with NCLT proceedings underway. However, investors should remain cautious because asset quality and profitability are still the key concerns; ICRA had cited elevated bad loans, weak earnings and continued stress in the microfinance portfolio when it downgraded the bank's debt ratings in July 2026. Overall: Q2 FY27 is a positive operational signal—stronger disbursements, loan growth and deposit growth—but the real trigger for a sustained re-rating will be whether Utkarsh can convert this growth into lower NPAs, falling credit costs and a return to profitability.
