Mazagon Dock pivots to ₹30,000 crore commercial yards
Mazagon Dock dropped its Thoothukudi shipyard plan and pivoted to two greenfield commercial clusters in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. This strategic shift targets a combined ₹30,000 crore investment to build 2.4 million GT capacity.
The Dighi and Dugarajapatnam projects each target 1.2 million GT capacity under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. This follows a strong Q1 FY27 where PAT grew 21.74% YoY to ₹550.46 crore on ₹2,943 crore revenue. This matters as it diversifies MDL away from pure-play defense dependency while its legacy defense order book consolidates at ₹18,218 crore. I am watching the formal Detailed Project Report submission for Dighi by Q3 FY27 and the timeline for the ₹70,000 crore Project 75I submarine contract.
The market views the Thoothukudi cancellation as a setback, pricing the new yards as distant cash sinks. What the consensus misses is the mechanical advantage of MDL's ₹12,878 crore net cash pile. Most shipyards destroy ROCE during greenfield construction by taking on massive debt. MDL can self-fund this transition without interest cost drag. Furthermore, commercial yards offer faster cash conversion cycles than elongated defense projects. The market misprices this as a delayed expansion, ignoring it is a highly capitalized pivot into a faster-turning asset class.
Accumulate for long-term commercial capacity re-rating.
