Dr. Reddy’s profit falls 36% as US sales weakens.

DRREDDY
Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Limited (DRREDDY) reported a 36% year on year decline in Q2 FY27 net profit to ₹925 crore. Revenue fell 1.5% to ₹8,671 crore. But the geographical breakdown tells a more interesting story than the headline numbers. North American revenue fell 23% to ₹2,489 crore, primarily because of lower sales of lenalidomide, a generic cancer drug. Competition and pricing pressure in this market have become a major challenge. However, the weakness is not uniform across the business. India revenue grew 17% to ₹1,850 crore, while emerging market revenue increased 24%. The company also said its underlying business, excluding North American lenalidomide sales, continued to deliver double digit growth. That distinction matters. A decline driven by a specific product can have a different long-term implication from a broad slowdown across the company's portfolio. There are other pressures to watch. Gross margin fell to 52.1% from 54.7% a year earlier. Management estimated that higher raw material and outbound freight costs related to the Middle East conflict reduced margins by around 100 basis points. My view: I would not dismiss Dr. Reddy’s based on one weak quarter, but I would not ignore the US business either. The key test is whether new launches and growth in India and emerging markets can offset declining lenalidomide sales. In the next quarter, I would track North American revenue, gross margin recovery and growth in the underlying business. My stance: The domestic business is showing resilience, but a sustained recovery depends on how successfully the company replaces lost US product revenue.
