Jio Platforms' first results reveal more than growth

JPL
Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) reported its first quarterly results as a listed company, with Q2 FY27 net profit rising 13.7% year on year to ₹8,387 crore. Revenue from operations grew 11.4% to ₹40,475 crore, while EBITDA increased 16.6% to ₹21,879 crore. But the most interesting development is on the balance sheet. Jio Platforms raised ₹30,188 crore through its IPO, India's largest public offering at the time. It used ₹27,500 crore of the proceeds to repay external commercial borrowings of its subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm. As a result, net debt fell 78.6% year on year to ₹8,822 crore. That is a significant change in its financial position. There is also strong operating momentum. Jio's total customer base reached 542.4 million, including 300 million 5G subscribers. Its fixed broadband base crossed 30 million. However, average revenue per user (ARPU) increased only 3.5% year-on-year to ₹218.80 per month. This is the number I would watch closely. Subscriber growth is important, but the ability to generate more revenue from each customer will determine how effectively Jio monetises its massive network. My view: Jio Platforms has entered the listed market with strong scale, improving margins and a much lower debt burden. But investors should distinguish between the benefits of IPO led debt repayment and sustainable growth from operations. The next trigger is ARPU growth. I would also track 5G monetisation, broadband additions and capital expenditure. My stance: The operating performance is encouraging. The real test is whether Jio can consistently increase customer value without relying only on subscriber additions.
