Jio's ₹30,188 crore IPO faces a valuation test

RELIANCE
Jio Platforms Limited's ₹30,188 crore IPO was fully subscribed within roughly two hours of opening today. The price band is ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share. At the upper end, the company is valued at approximately ₹10.3 lakh crore. The demand is impressive. But demand and valuation are two different questions. Jio has around 533 million subscribers and accounts for approximately 60% of India's mobile data traffic. Its scale gives it a strong position in telecom, while its cloud, enterprise and AI businesses offer potential sources of future growth. The IPO is priced at roughly 34 times earnings, according to Business Standard, compared with around 39 times for Bharti Airtel. On that comparison, Jio does not appear more expensive on the headline earnings multiple. But I would not stop there. Jio's future returns depend on its ability to increase revenue per user, manage infrastructure spending and generate meaningful profits from digital services. A large subscriber base is valuable, but it does not automatically translate into higher shareholder returns. The offer is also a fresh issue, with proceeds intended partly for debt repayment at its telecom subsidiary and partly for general corporate purposes. My view: Jio has the scale to justify a premium valuation, but the IPO should be judged on earnings growth and cash generation, not its brand name or opening-day subscription numbers. The next trigger is the final subscription data on October 23. After listing, I would track revenue per user, margins and capital expenditure. Strong demand is a positive signal. It is not, by itself, an investment thesis.
