RBI Rate Hike: How Different Sectors Could Be Affected
The RBI's decision to raise the repo rate to 5.50% on October 7 is important for investors. This was the first rate hike since February 2023. A change in interest rates doesn't affect all businesses equally. Some sectors may benefit, while others could face higher costs and slower demand. 1. Real Estate and Automobile Higher interest rates can increase home loan and vehicle loan EMIs. When borrowing becomes expensive, customers may delay buying houses or vehicles. This can affect property sales and automobile demand. 2. Banking Sector Banks may increase lending rates, which can improve interest income. But they may also have to offer higher deposit rates to attract customers. Higher EMIs can also affect loan demand and borrowers' repayment capacity. 3. High-Valuation Growth Stocks Companies trading at high valuations can face pressure when interest rates rise. This is because a larger portion of their valuation depends on earnings expected in the future. Higher interest rates reduce the present value of those future earnings. 4. Debt and Fixed Income New fixed deposits and debt investments could gradually offer better interest rates. However, existing bond prices may fall when market yields increase. Investors holding long-duration bonds can be more sensitive to these changes. The next RBI Monetary Policy Committee meeting is scheduled for December 2– Rate cuts are currently not expected in the near term. What investors should understand: Interest rate changes affect borrowing costs, consumer spending, business profits and stock valuations. Instead of looking at the repo rate alone, investors should also study how individual companies are affected by higher financing costs.
