India’s AI Boom Runs Through a Strand of Glass!
Imagine sending a WhatsApp message or asking ChatGPT a question. Behind that simple action, information travels through tiny strands of glass called optical fibers.
Now, here’s the interesting part: AI needs more than powerful chips. It also needs powerful connections.
Traditional copper cables struggle to transmit huge amounts of data over longer distances. Optical fibers use pulses of light to carry data faster and more efficiently, making them essential for telecom networks, broadband and AI data centres.
But making these fibers isn’t easy. It starts with a glass cylinder called a preform, manufactured through specialised chemical processes. This cylinder is heated to nearly 2,000°C and stretched into incredibly thin glass fibers. These fibers are then bundled and protected to create optical cables.
The real competitive advantage lies in manufacturing the preform. It requires technical expertise, specialised equipment and consistent quality. Limited manufacturing capabilities can create entry barriers for new competitors.
As AI data centres expand, demand for high-capacity optical connectivity could create opportunities for companies operating in this value chain.
