India’s EV Battery Challenge.......................

Imagine India building thousands of EVs but the most important part inside them still depends heavily on technology from outside India. That is the challenge emerging in the battery-cell industry. China has a strong position in LFP battery technology and the broader battery supply chain. Recent Chinese export controls on certain battery materials and manufacturing technology have highlighted the vulnerability of countries dependent on imports. India is responding by trying to build its own battery ecosystem. One company to watch from a learning perspective is

ARE&M
Amara Raja Energy & Mobility. The company is moving beyond its traditional lead-acid battery business and building capabilities across lithium-ion cells, battery packs, BMS and energy-storage solutions. Its Telangana Giga Corridor has a long-term target of up to 16 GWh, while its Customer Qualification Plant is already operational. The interesting part is not simply “EV growth.” The bigger story is technology localisation. If India wants a complete EV ecosystem, it needs to develop capabilities across: ➡️ Battery cells ➡️ Cell chemistry ➡️ Manufacturing technology ➡️ Battery management systems ➡️ Raw materials ➡️ Recycling That transition could take years and execution, technology access, capital requirements and competition remain important risks. India’s EV opportunity depends not only on vehicle demand, but also on developing competitive domestic battery technology, manufacturing and supply chains.
