India’s Marine Exports Find New Momentum Beyond the U.S.

India’s marine export industry is gaining strength from diversified global demand, helping offset weakness in its largest market, the U.S. Marine exports rose 16% to $4.87 billion in April–October, even as U.S. purchases fell 7.4% following the steep 50% tariff on Indian seafood. Instead of slowing, exporters redirected volumes to fast-growing non-US markets, with China, Vietnam, Belgium, Japan, Russia, Canada and the UK driving the surge. This shift highlights a structural rebalancing in India’s seafood trade, reducing overdependence on any single market. The biggest tailwind came from India’s core product segment: shrimp and prawn exports, which jumped 17.4%, supported by stronger Asian demand and competitive pricing. China and Vietnam, in particular, have emerged as major buyers as they restock for processing and re-export. Meanwhile, European markets such as Belgium and the UK increased orders thanks to stable consumer demand and lighter supply from competing regions. The rebound underscores the adaptability of India’s seafood sector—especially in logistics, compliance and species diversification—during a period of global trade friction. If this momentum holds, India may emerge with a more resilient export footprint, less vulnerable to tariff shocks in any single geography. Companies directly or indirectly linked to marine exports
