IndiGo: Rising Fares, But Falling Profits

IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.) faced a difficult Q2 FY27 as higher ticket prices failed to protect its profitability. The airline increased its revenue per passenger kilometre by 34%, but its fuel expenses jumped nearly 67% to around ₹9,970 crore. Total income grew 24% to approximately ₹24,300 crore, while the company reported a loss of around ₹1,880 crore. So, what went wrong? Think of an airline like a bus service. Even if passengers pay more for tickets, rising fuel prices, maintenance expenses and staff salaries can eat up the additional earnings. Fewer flights can also make the cost of operating each seat higher. INDIGO is exploring new revenue opportunities through premium Stretch seats, additional services such as meals and seat selection, and its BluChip loyalty programme. Stock Market Connection: One listed Nifty 500 company to understand from this development is InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. (NSE: INDIGO), the parent company of IndiGo. Its business performance is closely connected to aviation demand, passenger fares, fuel prices and operating costs. Higher ticket prices do not always mean higher profits because fuel costs, maintenance expenses and operational efficiency also matter.
