Amara Raja Energy & Mobility: Lead-Acid Steady

ARE&M
Amara Raja Energy & Mobility (NSE : ARE&M) makes lead-acid batteries under the Amaron, PowerZone and Quanta brands for automotive OEM and aftermarket customers. It also operates in lead recycling, energy storage and power electronics. Its new-energy arm, Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies (ARACT), is building lithium-ion cell and pack manufacturing in Telangana. What happened: In Q1FY27, revenue grew 23.9% year on year to Rs 4,215 crore. Operating profit rose 11.7% to Rs 406 crore; operating margin fell 1.1 percentage points to 9.6%. Net profit grew 15.9% to Rs 191 crore; net profit margin slipped to 4.5% from 4.8%. The lead-acid business posted double-digit growth in automotive OEM and aftermarket volumes. Industrial UPS demand benefited from data-centre requirements. New-energy revenue grew over 50%, driven by telecom-pack and EV-pack supplies. Why it matters: ARACT’s Customer Qualification Plant was commissioned in July 2026. The positive-electrode plant is expected to commercialise in Q2FY27. Cumulative ARACT investment reached Rs 1,900 crore by Q1 FY27. The Giga Corridor roadmap targets 16 GWh of cell capacity, about 5 GWh of low-voltage pack capacity and a 10 GWh BESS facility; BESS construction had begun by Q1 FY27. What I am watching: Operating margin at 9.6% is below 10.7% a year ago. Margin recovery depends on how quickly ARACT moves from qualification to commercial scale, and on the core business holding its volume momentum. My stance: Amara Raja combines a stable, cash-generating lead-acid base with a credibly funded lithium-ion build-out. The qualification plant commissioning is a real milestone. Scale and returns will take time. I do not hold a position in Amara Raja Energy & Mobility at the time of writing. This is not investment advice.
