Genus Power: Debt Fuelling a Smart-Meter Boom

GENUSPOWER
Genus Power Infrastructures shows how debt can become a growth tool. The company is riding India’s smart-meter rollout, as utilities replace conventional meters with connected devices. For shareholders, this creates a large opportunity, but rising debt and working-capital intensity need attention. Genus has used leverage to scale its smart-meter manufacturing and AMISP business. Its executable order book stood at about ₹24,020 crore as of June 2026, excluding taxes. Many concessions run for 8-9 years, adding a recurring element beyond meter supply. In FY26, standalone revenue rose 94% to ₹4,738 crore, EBITDA increased 104% to ₹960 crore and PAT from continuing operations jumped 106% to ₹605 crore. In Q1 FY27, revenue grew 45% year-on-year to ₹1,365 crore, EBITDA rose 30% to ₹260 crore and PAT increased 27% to ₹163 crore. But growth is consuming capital. Net debt reached ₹1,573 crore at March 2026, up from ₹605 crore a year earlier. However, debtor days improved from 187 to 89, while total working-capital days fell from 343 to 274. Management expects FY27 revenue of ₹6,000-6,500 crore and aims to install at least one crore smart meters. It expects working-capital days to improve by another 50-75 days and positive operating cash flow from FY28. Debt is beneficial only if returns from the order book exceed its cost. The large pipeline and profit growth are positives, but margin pressure, execution delays, interest costs and cash-flow risks remain. Genus can create substantial value, if growth converts into cash; otherwise, leverage could magnify the downside. Balance-sheet discipline will decide whether debt becomes a growth engine or a burden for investors.
