Gujarat Fluorochemicals: Battery Materials Bet Is Large

FLUOROCHEM
Gujarat Fluorochemicals (GFCL) makes specialty chemicals using fluorine chemistry. Through subsidiary GFCL EV, it is building a battery materials portfolio covering electrolytes, cathodes, anodes, binders and separators. Battery materials revenue is not disclosed separately. What happened: In FY26, revenue grew 5.5% to Rs 4,996 crore. EBITDA margin improved to 25.8% and net profit rose 5.1% to Rs 573.8 crore. In Q1FY27, revenue jumped 24% year on year to Rs 1,588 crore and net profit rose 20.3% to Rs 219 crore. Fluorochemicals revenue rose 52%, driven by rising R32 refrigerant prices. ROCE was 16.63% in Q1FY27. Why it matters: GFCL EV has planned capex of Rs 6,000 crore committed through FY28. For FY27, Rs 2,300 crore of a total Rs 3,150 crore capex is earmarked for battery materials. Major electrolyte manufacturers have approved its LiPF6 and are ramping commercial orders. LFP cathode samples have received initial customer approvals, with final qualification targeted by end of Q3FY27. PVDF binder is nearing final approval. What I am watching: GFCL targets 2x asset turns and EBITDA margins above 25% from battery materials. But LFP cathode is still in qualification and commercial volumes are not confirmed. The company is initially targeting the BESS market. The stock trades at 74.6 times trailing earnings, against a five-year median of 55.9 times and an industry P/E of 25.2 times. My stance: The fluorine chemistry base is real and the strategy is sound. But at 74 times trailing earnings, the stock prices in execution that is still unfolding. The core chemicals business alone cannot support a valuation at this level. I do not hold a position in Gujarat Fluorochemicals at the time of writing. This is not investment advice.
