JSWSTEEL
JSW Steel (NSE : JSWSTEEL) produces flat and long steel products. It has operations in India, the USA and Italy, with a combined crude steel capacity of 37.9 million tonnes.
What happened:
In Q2FY27, JSW Steel’s consolidated sales volume grew 13% year on year to 7.46 million tonnes, the highest ever. Flat product sales rose 16% and auto sector sales grew 36%, both at record levels. Realisations rose nearly 7% to Rs 73,037 per tonne. Net sales grew 20.7% year on year and net profit surged 225.6% to Rs 5,359 crore. The Vijayanagar BF-3 ramp-up in Karnataka drove the production increase.
Why it matters:
India’s steel output grew 5.6% year on year to 130 million tonnes during January to September 2026, among the fastest globally. Chinese steel production fell 2.9% over the same period, supporting prices worldwide. Auto was the standout in Q2, with autos, infrastructure and real estate the primary demand drivers. India domestic sales were 7.27 million tonnes, up 14% year on year.
What I am watching:
JSW trades at a P/E of 19.4 times, a 75% premium to SAIL at 11.1 times. ROE is 10.2%. Coking coal and freight costs are key input variables. The US and Italian operations contribute to consolidated volumes but their margin profiles are different from the domestic business. Demand from autos and real estate needs to sustain to justify the premium multiple.
My stance:
The Q2 numbers are strong and the volume story is real. But at 19.4 times earnings, JSW is priced for continued execution. Input cost moves and the margin drag from US and Italian operations add complexity. The domestic business earns the premium; the question is whether it can keep compounding at this pace.
I do not hold a position in JSW Steel at the time of writing. This is not investment advice.#WatchOutFor#EquityResearch#TrendingSectors#FundamentalViews
