KERNEX
Kernex Microsystems (NSE: KERNEX) designs and executes safety-critical railway electronics and signalling projects. The company holds RDSO SIL-4 certification for Kavach Version 4.0 -- one of a handful of certified suppliers for India’s anti-collision system rollout.
What happened: Q1 FY27 revenue was Rs 504 crore against Rs 56 crore in Q1 FY26, a near-10x jump. EBITDA margin was 32.3% (Rs 163 crore); net profit was Rs 110 crore versus Rs 7 crore a year earlier. Total Kavach contracts stand at Rs 5,174 crore (incl. GST); Rs 1,687 crore executed; unexecuted balance is Rs 3,487 crore. Cumulative executable revenue is projected at Rs 6,727 crore across FY27-29. AMC revenues are projected to grow from Rs 5 crore in FY27 to Rs 185 crore by FY29 as units scale.
Why it matters: Indian Railways mandates Kavach on all broad-gauge routes; every new locomotive must be equipped before commissioning. The total addressable network is 81,000 route km; Railways plans to tender another 41,000 route km between FY27 and FY29. SIL-4 certification is a hard entry barrier. Despite ROCE of 47.8% and ROE of 43.5%, Kernex trades at 15.7x P/E against an industry median of 38.9x.
What I am watching: Quarterly order inflows from new Railway tenders, AMC revenue from FY28, and whether non-rail segments generate meaningful revenue.
My stance: The 9x revenue jump is order execution, not a demand spike -- the backlog was always there. The Rs 3,487 crore unexecuted book gives three-year visibility. The discount to peers at 15.7x, given 47%+ returns on capital, is the thesis. The risk is execution slippage on large, turnkey contracts.
I do not hold a position in Kernex Microsystems at the time of writing. This is not investment advice.#HiddenGems#FundamentalViews#EquityResearch#WatchOutFor
