Knowledge Marine: ₹1,300 cr order book; Saphale - the test

KMEW
Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works (NSE: KMEW) builds tugs, pilot boats, workboats and dredgers, and charters and repairs marine vessels. Q1 FY27 revenue rose to ₹115.41 crore, up 138.2% YoY and 70.7% QoQ. Net profit surged to ₹62.75 crore from ₹11.08 crore a year earlier. The 54.4% PAT margin is not a sustainable run-rate; management guided 35-40% normalised operating margin, with Q1 aided by strong dredging execution. Dredging and ancillary services generated ₹104.41 crore of segment revenue, up 286.9% YoY, while shipbuilding contributed ₹21.22 crore versus zero in Q1 FY26. The order book stood at over ₹1,300 crore: dredging ₹240 crore, charter and hire ₹850 crore, shipbuilding ₹240 crore, plus a ₹200 crore inter-company order with Knowledge Shipyard for green tugs and patrol boats. The structural shift to watch is the Saphale shipyard. KMEW is committing roughly ₹1,000 crore of capex over the next 1.5 years, with Phase I targeting 14 vessels per year by FY27 end. This transforms KMEW from an asset operator into a manufacturing platform. Against FY26 revenue of ₹256 crore, the capex scale is substantial. Net borrowings were ₹148.4 crore at March 2026, D/E ratio 0.39x. The stock closed at ₹2,992.50 on 5 October 2026, up about 70% in 52 weeks and trading at 58.6x earnings, already above Nuvama's ₹2,500 Buy target from December 2025. What I am watching: Saphale Phase I commissioning, order intake for the new yard, and whether the capex is funded without excessive dilution or leverage. My stance: Compelling theme, execution risk is high. I want to see Saphale operational before re-rating the earnings potential further. I do not hold a position in Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Limited at the time of writing. This is not investment advice.
