Dalmia Bharat slides as Q2 Ebitda drops 29%

Dalmia Bharat Ltd (

DALBHARAT
) reported a 29% YoY decline in Q2FY27 Ebitda to ₹493 crore. The market response was sharp, with the stock falling 6% and hitting a 52-week low after earnings downgrades followed the results. What stands out is that volumes grew only 3% YoY to 7.1 million tonnes, well below the industry's estimated 9-10% growth. That suggests Dalmia Bharat is not just facing a weak demand environment in parts of eastern and northeastern India, but may also be losing market share. Profitability came under pressure from weak volumes, lower realizations and rising input costs. Ebitda per tonne fell to ₹694, a multi-quarter low. The challenge may not be over yet. Management expects additional fuel cost pressure in Q3 and higher costs linked to the ramp-up of the acquired JaiPrakash Associates cement assets. The headline issue is not simply a weak quarter. The bigger concern is whether the company's expanding capacity can generate adequate returns. Capacity has grown faster than volumes in recent years, while utilization remains below industry levels. As more capacity comes online, improving utilization becomes critical for margins, return ratios and balance-sheet efficiency. There are positives to watch. Management expects cement price hikes, better operating leverage and improved regional mix to support a recovery in Ebitda per tonne towards ₹1,000 in Q3. Demand recovery in H2FY27 would also help absorb the growing capacity base. For now, investors may focus less on new capacity announcements and more on volume growth, utilization levels and margin recovery. The stock's re-rating potential appears tied to execution rather than expansion. View: Margin recovery and utilization improvement are the key indicators to watch before sentiment can meaningfully improve.
