Exide leads cell race, valuation reflects the edge

EXIDEIND
has commissioned its 6 GWh lithium-ion cell plant, while Amara Raja Energy & Mobility targets its first 2 GWh commercial facility by June 2027. The primary driver is the transition from conventional lead-acid storage toward electric mobility and energy storage systems. Exide Industries EXIDEIND reported a standalone revenue growth of 17.6 percent year-on-year in Q1FY27, with an EBITDA margin of 12.4 percent and a recovery in exports. Amara Raja Energy & Mobility ARE&M posted a 23.9 percent increase in consolidated revenue, but its EBITDA margin narrowed to 9.6 percent due to higher operating costs and new business investments, alongside a 20 percent drop in automotive exports. Exide enjoys an execution advantage through its early plant commissioning and superior core margins. However, headlines often overlook that this lead is priced in. Exide trades at an FY28E valuation of 25.1 times earnings, compared to 12.6 times for Amara Raja. Amara Raja’s lower valuation cushions downside risks, but it faces a longer wait for commercial cell production scale-up and margin recovery. Both entities face capital-intensive spending cycles where cash generation will dictate actual returns. Investors should track capacity utilisation rates for Exide's new facility, validation cycles for customer orders, and raw material cost pass-through efficacy for Amara Raja. View: Equal-weight on both names; monitor execution milestones before expanding exposure.
