INDIGO
Secures Temporary Relief from FDTL Norms to Stabilize Operations

INDIGO
has resumed hiring for its A320 fleet after securing a temporary waiver from the new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms. The move follows unprecedented flight cancellations and mounting pressure to stabilize operations. While the disruption has dented performance metrics, analysts expect limited financial impact due to IndiGo’s scale and market dominance./ On December 5, the Ministry of Civil Aviation placed the new FDTL norms in abeyance for IndiGo until February 10, 2026. The norms, designed to mitigate pilot fatigue, were suspended after over 1,000 flights were cancelled in a single day—the highest in IndiGo’s history. IndiGo immediately restarted recruitment for A320 captains and senior first officers. Eligibility includes Indian nationals or OCI cardholders under 55 (first officers) or 62 (captains), with specific flying hour thresholds. Cabin attendant hiring also opened for female candidates aged 18–27, with relocation flexibility. - Industry Pushback on Waiver Pilot bodies like FIP and ALPA criticized the waiver, citing safety risks and judicial non-compliance. ALPA warned that delaying fatigue protections undermines aviation science and endangers both crew and passengers. - Flight Cancellations and Performance Impact IndiGo’s on-time performance dropped below 4% on December 5, with 96% of flights delayed. Over 3,000 flights have been cancelled since early November, with another 1,500 expected before operations normalize. The CEO aims to restore schedules by December 15. - Financial Impact Expected to Be Contained Analysts estimate cancellations will affect less than 2.5% of quarterly flights. With a winter schedule 6% larger than summer, and total quarterly flights at ~2 lakh, the topline impact is projected at 5–7% only if disruptions persist. Market leadership and scale offer resilience. Would you like a dashboard comparing IndiGo’s operational metrics and hiring trends with peers like Air India, Vistara, and Akasa Air?
