Mahindra Finance Q2 net profit jumps 61 percent

M&MFIN
reported a 61 percent year-on-year increase in net earnings for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027. Standalone disbursements reached Rs 16,499 crore, supported by strong demand in the passenger vehicle and three-wheeler segments. While the profit growth looks impressive, headline numbers require careful context. The reported net profit is not directly comparable to the previous period due to a change in the Expected Credit Loss model. Furthermore, net interest margins contracted by 30 basis points quarter-on-quarter to 7 percent, driven by a high liquidity buffer and non-yielding trade advances that created a drag on margins. The company is trading at an attractive valuation of 1.3 times estimated fiscal year 2028 book value, yet the stock remains range-bound. The market is pricing in structural concerns: a heavy fixed-rate loan portfolio, rising funding costs, and exposure to rural and semi-urban markets that are vulnerable to weather-related shocks like El Nino. Although collection efficiencies have kept credit costs low and the combined gross Stage 2 and 3 ratio improved to 8.1 percent, near-term headwinds on margins and asset quality could cap earnings expansion. Investors should monitor rural economic conditions, monsoon trends, and margin trajectories in upcoming quarters to gauge whether diversification into non-vehicle segments can offset core financing pressures. Rating: Equal-weight
