NTPC posts 26% profit rise on strong demand

NTPC Limited

NTPC
reported a consolidated group net profit of Rs 14,247 crore for H1FY27, driven by robust power demand and high thermal plant utilisation. Power demand in India surged during the first half of the fiscal year, with electricity generation rising 11 percent and overall demand growing 15 percent. NTPC capitalized on this environment as its coal-based stations operated at a plant load factor of 75.11 percent, outperforming the national average of 68.35 percent. Captive coal mine dispatches also increased 21 percent, helping the company control fixed costs and boost operating efficiency. The core earnings growth matters because it highlights the continued dominance of thermal generation during periods of high industrial and digital load growth, even as clean energy investments scale up. Subsidiary contributions added Rs 3,194 crore to group profit, while NTPC Green Energy recorded a 60 percent increase in generation to reach 10.88 billion units. The headline figures tend to overlook the heavy capital expenditure cycle required to sustain this trajectory. Group capex reached Rs 23,932 crore in H1FY27, with upcoming thermal projects alone estimated to require nearly Rs 67,000 crore. While diversification into battery storage, nuclear energy, and data centre power supplies opens new long-term avenues, execution risk and debt deployment for these capital-intensive projects remain key variables. At current levels, the stock trades at roughly 10 times estimated fiscal 2028 earnings and 1.2 times book value. Investors should monitor upcoming capacity addition milestones, particularly the targeted 9,639 MW expansion for FY28, along with execution updates on the 40-GWh battery energy storage programme. View: Overweight with a medium-term growth focus tied to capacity scale-up.
