Tata Motors CV revenue jumps 42%, margins under pressure
Tata Motors Ltd (
TMPV
) reported a 42% year-on-year rise in Q2 FY27 commercial vehicle revenue to ₹23,930 crore.
Total wholesale volumes grew 43% to 135,114 vehicles, led by strong domestic demand and a sharp increase in international shipments.
The quarter was driven by volume expansion rather than pricing. International volumes jumped 177% to 21,132 units, supported by a large Indonesia order, while overall CV demand benefited from infrastructure spending, freight movement, replacement demand and fleet expansion. Tata Motors also retained leadership in the domestic CV market with a 36.2% share in H1 FY27, up 110 basis points from FY26.
What matters is that revenue growth is hiding a margin challenge. Management flagged a 540 bps year-on-year commodity cost impact in Q2, with steel and rubber costs remaining elevated. Even after multiple price hikes during FY27, the company has not fully recovered the increase in input costs. As a result, EBITDA margin fell 94 bps year-on-year to 11.4%.
The headline focuses on strong volumes, but investors should pay closer attention to profitability. Volume growth can support earnings for a while, yet sustained commodity inflation can limit margin expansion. Management has also indicated further cost pressure in Q3. At the same time, higher interest rates may increase financing costs for truck buyers, potentially affecting demand growth in coming quarters.
Another factor to watch is the proposed Iveco acquisition. Execution timelines, integration benefits and cash deployment could influence future earnings expectations.
View: Strong demand and market-share gains support the business outlook, but margin pressure from commodities and financing costs remains the key variable for investors to track.
